The Czech Eco-Counselling Network (STEP) was founded in September 1997. In the three preceding years eco-counselling centres situated in five locations in the Czech Republic had been cooperating in a joint project on mutual communication and common education in communication disciplines. At that time they also jointly prepared the publication "The Eco-Counselling" describing several basic projects of eco-counselling centres.
STEP promotes eco-counselling at national level, enables sharing of experience, common education and projects, etc.
STEP as the Czech national network is membership organization. Our members are based as environmental non-profit non-governmental organizations dealing with eco-counselling. At present the Network has members, which are placed in different towns of the Czech republic (Brno, České Budějovice, Horní Maršov, Hradec Králové, Jihlava, Litoměřice, Most, Praha, Valašské Meziříčí, Veselí nad Moravou, Vlašim, Uherský Brod) and which act locally or regionally.
The work of eco-counselling centres consists mainly in precautionary environment conservation efforts and support to cooperation and communication between decision-making sectors in the society - local administration, state administration, scientific research, the public, and entrepreneurial sphere. The goal of the eco-counselling is to enable citizens the access to objective and comprehensive information on the environment, ecological problems and solutions, products and their impacts on the environment. Thus, the eco-counselling contributes to creating public environmental awareness.
Individual projects performed by eco-counselling centres step in many areas of environment conservation. "Urban" eco-counsellors very often carry out projects for prevention of waste build-up, saving water and energy, consumption counseling; "rural" eco-counsellors pay attention to supporting sustainable landscape utilization and organic farming.
The Czech Eco-Counselling Network (STEP) is a member of the Eco-Counselling Europe.
