ECO - ECHO
ECO STANDS FOR
Long-term common projects
At present we have been parallelly solving the projects "Strengthening of the Eco-Counselling in the Czech Republic" (supported by The Rockefeller Brothers Fund) and "The Eco-Counselling and its Impact on Development of the Civic Society" (supported by The Atlantic Philantropies). STEP has developed a system, under which the member centres participated in implementing the common project by means of subprojects that were best suited to the needs of each eco-counselling centre´s territory and technical priorities.
A Card Index for the Eco-Consumer/A Card Index for the Eco-Counsellor (KES)
KEP has been a long-term and so far the most extensive STEP project. The preparation work was started back in 1998. The Card Index is a catalogue of standard questions and answers from the eco-counselling practice. The Card Index also is based on experience of our foreign colleagues. In the first phase of the project materials from foreign eco-counselling centres were translated and then adapted to Czech conditions in several steps and, finally, external examination was carried out. At present the following chapters are being prepared: Waste, Washing and Cleaning, Toys and Drawing Utensils, Pollutants in the Environment, Heat Insulations, Energy. The Card Index was published towards the end of 2000, entitled Questions of Consumers and Answers of Eco-Counselling Centres. The Card Index will gradually be updated and supplemented with some more chapters. In 2001 we started to make an electronic version of the Card Index. We will work together both with Czech consumer organizations and with other organizations providing environmental information in the internet. The Card Index will be a part of STEP internet pages being prepared now. In addition to RBF, the project received support from: CBC Phare, NROS, Milieukontakt OostEuropa.
Steps Towards Sustainability - a Collection of Solved Examples of Local Agenda 21
In 2000 the STEP issued the publication Steps Towards Sustainability which presents and evaluates 17 implemented projects of Local Agenda 21. These are the projects from all over the Czech Republic focused on the strategic planning of community or region development in harmony with sustainable development principles, or projects dealing with partial issues of environmental conservation in a broader socio-economic context. The STEP proposed a standard outline for the description of separate projects that would enable to compare them with one another and understand their substantial features so that they could eventually be reused. The publication (so called best practice guide) is the first event of its kind in the Czech Republic that draws attention to projects of many organisations that may serve as an example to follow. Both the STEP members and several organisations outside the Network took part in developing the projects. In 2002 the publication was extended, its electronic version prepared and presented on the STEP website (www.ekoporadna.cz). In addition to the support from The Atlantic Philanthropies, the project was also supported also from the sources of the CR Ministry of the Environment and the Open Society Fund Prague.
The European Campaign for Sustainable Towns - publication of a Czech translation of basic documents of the European Campaign for Sustainable Towns, their distribution and promotion
In 2002 the STEP was a Czech partner to the European Campaign for Sustainable Towns and Villages. Along with the Union of Czech Towns and Villages and the Czech Ecological Institute, STEP published the basic documents of the European Campaign for Sustainable Cities - the Aalborg Charter, Lisboa Action Plan and Hannover Appeal. The brochure was distributed to 136 Czech towns and supplemented with the Brno Appeal to Czech Towns to join this campaign. The project was supported also from the sources of the European Campaign for Sustainable Cities.
Other activities, especially workshops and seminars are concentrated on eco-counsellors education and collaboration.
